Papa Candelo is a popular Lwa in Dominica with origins that can be traced to the Islands of Hispaniola. According to the Legends, Candelo was an enslaved African who was forced to work on a sugar plantation. He was very powerful and knowledgeable in African religion, spiritual and mystic traditions and due to these, people came to consult and benefit from his expertise. Another reason why people flocked him was that he produced and sold potent firewater.
Papa Candelo can be called upon to help solve any problem but his specialties involve bringing luck in business, finance and other endeavors. This spirit is called upon to alleviate poverty. As a deity associated with fire, he can be called upon to burn away all unwanted things. He is an ideal spirit to call upon when performing unhexing, uncrossing, and cleansing rituals. Papa Candelo is one of the most popular spirits of Yoruba Santeria. Work with the fire element , its color is red and is the brother of the Candelina or Candlemas, both are part of the Catholic liturgy in San Carlos Borromeo . A Candelo is considered a hopeless love , beau, jovial, attentive and handsome at the same time. In his day, November 4, devotees come dressed in red or parts of this color in reference to the deity. Masses, prayers, thanksgiving and cultural and sports activities are also held. In his honor they have made several meringues and bachata.
