Product Description

A cowrie, also known as kaudi or cowry is a marine mollusc which has a glossy, brightly patterned domed shell with a long, narrow opening. The cowrie was the shell most widely used worldwide as shell money. It is most abundant in the Indian Ocean and was collected in the Maldives and in Sri Lanka and on other Indian islands. The shells of cowries are usually smooth and shiny and more or less egg-shaped, with a flat under the surface which shows a long, narrow, slit-like opening, which is often toothed at the edges.

Cowrie shells are also worn as jewelry or otherwise used as ornaments or charms. Cowrie or Cowries are naturally formed shells that are considered rare and sacred. In Hindu Mythology, Cowries was obtained from Samudra Manthan along with Lakshmi and other rare, holy and divine products. Yellow Kaudi or Peeli Kowdi or Yellow Cowrie shell is of great significance in the worship of Goddess Mahalaxmi and Lord Vishnu. Yellow Kaudi is also used during the pooja of Goddess Baglamukhi. Many spiritual pooja processes are completed successfully with the aid of Yellow Cowrie. In Hindu Mythology, Yellow Kaudi is used to balance the planetary effect of Jupiter and the malefic effects of Ketu and Rahu. The attractive look and the feel of the cowries urged many to buy them and use them as jewelry and as decorative product and even for various ceremonial purposes. In ancient times these cowries were also used as a mode of payment in several parts of the world.
