Dr. Jose Gregorio was born on October 26, 1864, in Venezuela. He studies medicine in Caracas and Paris, establishing a practice dedicated to helping the poor in northern Caracas. Between 1891 and 1916, Hernandez dedicated himself to teaching, medicine, and religious practice.
As soon as he was able, he retired from medicine and went to Italy to be a monk. His frail health, however kept him from taking all the vows, and he died in Venezuela in 1919, while helping and invalid. Although dead only 82 years, he is considered well on his way to becoming and official, canonized, saint,. In 1986 the Pope decade him “venerable.” One of the steps towards canonization.
After his life, the legend of Dr. Hernandez began to grow in Venezuela. People around the country started claiming to have been granted miracles after praying for his intercession to God. At present, Dr. Hernandez is commonly invoked as "José Gregorio" by both doctors and patients for healing purposes.He is also called upon for protection during overland journeys. Eventually, his name became known all over Latin America and Spain.
