Product Overview

One of the first books to explore the unique tradition of Dominican shamanism, the magical practices called the 21 Divisions.

Like all forms of Caribbean Voodoo, practitioners of the 21 Divisions believe in one God, a distant God that doesn’t get involved in human affairs. Followers of this Dominican spiritual tradition believe that God created intermediaries to help humans, beings known as Los Misterios.

The Misterios are powerful beings with rulership and dominion over universal forces and human conditions. Practitioners of the 21 Divisions have ways of connecting with the Misterios to achieve success in life, improve their careers, resolve love and relationship issues, heal illness, and much more.

Filled with detailed insider information and real stories of healing, magic, and mystery, this book will serve as an illuminating guide to the 21 Divisions. Hector Salva―one of the foremost authorities on the practice of the 21 Divisions―offers his insights into:

The history and foundations of Dominican Voodoo
  • The major Misterios, or spirits, of the 21 Divisions
  • Ceremonies, rituals, and magical spells
  • How to get started on the path of the 21 Divisions

An Oral Tradition

Handed down orally and at first within the bloodlines of the family only, the many ways of practicing are not recorded in any book. This leads to great changes in short periods of time, as anyone who has ever played a game of telephone or whisper down the lane is well aware of. The tradition is also dependent upon human memory, the capacity and willingness to learn and absorb information, and the commitment of the students so that they can be fit enough to pass the teachings on. After receiving the teachings, the student-turned-teacher must also be able to correctly and fully share them with others.

In order to preserve the tradition and its practices, priests and priestesses came together creating secret groups to hand down the secrets, knowledge, and rituals. Families who had preserved the knowledge within them did the same. Rules and manner of practice, as well as other information would be shared and passed down to apprentices and students.

The Misterios

The Misterios are divided into groups known as Divisiones or Divisions. each group contains an array of spirits with an energy that binds them together. There are said to be twenty-one groups, thus the name 21 Divisions. Beginning at the highest level, there are three major divisions: the Black Division, the White Division, and the Blue Division. The Black Division encompasses the two major divisions of earth and fire. The White Division is also known as the Rada Division and connected to the energy of air. The Blue Division is of water and encompasses the Misterios of the Taino Indians of the islands and the water spirits. each of these three major divisions is split into seven divisions each. Thus, we get a total of 21 Divisions. Furthermore, there are magical meanings, sacredness, and associations in the numbers 3, 7, and 21. All are considered lucky and holy numbers.

Division Legba/Legba Division

The Division Legba is the group of Misterios connected with doors, passageways, and gates. Doors, gateways, and roads all represent opportunity and the potential for growth and progress in the 21 Divisions. When one has one’s doors or roads closed, this denotes that they lack any chances, opportunities, and therefore luck. Obstacles on one’s roads lead to troubles and issues. This division is the one in charge of opening the doors and roads in order for progress and success. Likewise it controls closing the doors and roads so that negativity cannot reach the servidor. This most well- known Misterio of this division is it’s leader Papa Legba.

Division del Fuego/Fire Division

This division is comprised of all the Misterios of Fire. This division’s ruler is known as Candelo Cedife and is associated with St. Charles Borromeo. The Fire Division is also known as Division Candelo (Candelo’s Division). The color of this division is red. It is mostly consulted for reversing hexes, getting revenge or justice, resolving difficult cases, cleansing, protection, and improving business and work. The Fire Division is one of the largest within the 21 Divisions. Within the Fire Division, many smaller divisions also exist.

Division de Justicia/Justice Division

This division is composed of all the Misterios of Justice and ruled by Belie Belcan. Sometimes this division is also called the Division Belcan. The Misterios of this division rule over creating justice and balance. In life, many of these Misterios assist in court cases, legal matters, and other such life issues. They can also be called up to serve justice or defend those who are just. Many of the Misterios of this division
