The azabache is a black little fist designed to dispel curses and negativity away from the wearer. Mal de ojo, or evil eye, is believed to result of excessive admiration or envious looks by others. Having newborn babies, kids, & adults wear an azabache is believed to protect them from the evil eye. The evil eye is a folk belief that the envy elicited by the good luck of fortunate people may result in their misfortune, whether it is envy of material possessions including livestock, or of beauty, health, or offspring.
The evil eye, an ancient symbol of protection is to ward off potentially harmful, negative, and otherwise envious looks from others that could bring bad fortune upon the recipient, and to bring peace of mind to the wearer. When anyone looks at what is excellent with an envious eye he fills the surrounding atmosphere with a pernicious quality, and transmits his own envenomed exhalations into whatever is nearest to him. The bead reflects the evil intent back to the onlooker. It somewhat resembles an eye and it is a factor in protecting the user.
Saint Michaels purpose is to fight against all evils and protect the souls of man against the devil. He is often pictured with a sword fighting a winged dragon, this relates to his mention in the New Testament. The many miracles of Saint Michael, the Archangel, are celebrated each year on his feast day of September 29th.
